Big Brown’s trainer on what happened - basically, we have no idea.

What’s better for the psyche of the American public - if the horse is injured and we have an excuse, or if there wasn’t anything wrong, and he just gave up?

We know by now that even athletes at the top of each league - Kobe, Tiger, Brady - are, at the end of the day, human.  I think that’s why we continue to watch.  We know that everyone can have a bad day, and that fact brings parity, and healthy competition that brings us back to watch every day.

But ironically, with horses and Big Brown in particular, I think we were expecting something more.  He became supernatural, unbeatable, and it’s really hard to think that even he could lose just because he was tired and hot.
