Even old New York was once New Amsterdam

Why they changed it I can't say, people just liked it better that way

What’s your Favorite Sandwich?

So, today’s National Sandwich Day, as it’s the birthday of John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, and you guessed it, he’s the inventor of the world-changing bread-meat-bread concept. As Liz Lemon so eloquently put it, all of humankind has one thing in common, the sandwich.

Living in New York, I know this to be true. My favorite sandwiches represent a smorgasbord of cultures, ranging from Banh Mi (from Banh Mi Saigon) to the fresh Saturday roast beef at Fiore’s, to pastrami at the Second Avenue Deli. And I haven’t even been to Defonte’s, Porchetta, or Luke’s Lobster yet.

My favorite sandwich probably has more to do with nostalgia than any sort of culinary judgement I could make though. But that’s the best part of sandwiches right? They take you places: ballgames, picnics, the mostly-blacked out memory of a corner deli at 4 am.

My all-time go-to sandwich comes from the Park Avenue Deli in Huntington, NY. It is the Buffalo Soldier. It’s perfect in it’s simplicity: one well breaded chicken cutlet, fully submerged and soaked in buffalo sauce, placed on a poppy-seed Kaiser roll, and slathered with blue cheese dressing. It’s basically a giant Hooters wing between two pieces of bread, and it’s perfect.

So, today I ask you to humor me. What’s your favorite sandwich and where is it from?
